Giovanni Boldini’s Paris Types: A Study of Two Women included in Degas and the Laundress: Women, Work, and Impressionism at The Cleveland Museum of Art
We are delighted to lend Boldini’s painting depicting a laundress to the Cleveland Museum of Art for their exhibition, Degas and the Laundress: Women, Work, and Impressionism. In this show, Degas’ works are contextualized with depictions of laundresses in various media, including paintings, drawings, prints, as well as ephemera such as posters, photographs, and books. The exhibition also features paintings by Gustave Caillebotte, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-August Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Honoré Daumier and Pablo Picasso.
Like Degas, Boldini was inspired by the image of the laundress, which also would have been a familiar sight for him on the Paris streets. As she zigzags quickly across the picture plane, a heavy bag of laundry slung over her shoulder, she was the perfect vehicle for Boldini to express his identifiable, virtuoso painting technique.
The exhibition continues until January 14, 2024.
